Planning a Rust server: Hardware, backups and wipe cycles

Slot count is not a hardware calculator

Rust load depends on active players, world size, entities, structures and extensions. An empty server may look light and then hit its limits on wipe night. Size for the expected peak and keep headroom for backups, updates and unusually busy events.

Consider CPU, memory and storage together

Strong per-core performance supports responsive simulation. Memory requirements grow with world activity, while NVMe storage shortens save and load operations. Watch tick rate, save duration and peak load instead of averages alone. A larger package without monitoring does not make the cause of a problem clearer.

Control world size and modifications

A larger map creates more data and spreads the community out. Plugins can improve moderation and gameplay, but may also attach work to frequent events. Add changes individually, record versions and compare metrics. A staging server prevents an untested update from surprising the live community.

Communicate the wipe schedule

Define whether a wipe resets only the map or also blueprints, then publish the schedule where players expect it. Last-minute changes damage trust more than a conservative plan. Before each wipe, check startup parameters, seed, map size, plugins and automated announcements.

Backups still matter when wipes are planned

• Back up before updates, configuration changes and wipes.
• Store copies away from the active server.
• Test at least one restore in a separate environment.
• Balance save frequency against load and acceptable data loss.
