Measure before changing settings
A Minecraft server advances the world in ticks. When ticks repeatedly take too long, blocks respond late, mobs stutter and players experience rubber-banding. Start with timings or a suitable profiler. Low network latency helps responsiveness but cannot fix an overloaded tick loop.
Fast cores often matter more than a very high core count
Several tasks run in parallel, but the central game loop remains sensitive to per-core performance. Additional cores help plugins, networking and background work without replacing fast individual cores. Keep headroom for peaks when many players explore new terrain at once.
Size memory for the world and modpack
Too little memory causes frequent collection or crashes. Assigning as much as possible can lengthen garbage-collection pauses and will not repair a slow plugin. Begin with a sensible allocation, observe heap use and garbage collection, then increase it based on evidence.
Control view distance and world generation
High view and simulation distances multiply the number of active chunks. Pre-generating a world can reduce peaks caused by exploration. Set sensible limits for large farms, entities and redstone contraptions where they do not harm gameplay, and test changes under realistic player counts.
Review plugins individually
- Install only extensions that are actively used.
- Compare profiling data before and after updates.
- Create backups before version changes and plugin migrations.
- Use logs and tick data to distinguish configuration from infrastructure issues.
Explore managed options under game servers, or choose a KVM server for full system control.
