Hosting a Discord bot reliably with Node.js or Python

A bot needs a reproducible start

Record the runtime version, dependencies and start command in the project. Node.js projects should commit a lockfile; Python projects need a defined dependency list or modern project manifest. A fresh checkout should start through a few documented steps instead of relying on packages installed globally on one machine.

Tokens do not belong in source code

Store the bot token as an environment variable or protected secret. Never commit a local .env file. If a token appears in logs, screenshots or Git, regenerate it in the Discord Developer Portal. Removing it from the latest line is not enough because Git history retains earlier copies.

Node.js or Python?

Discord.js is a common choice in the Node.js ecosystem, while Python projects often use libraries from the discord.py family. Either can run reliably. Team experience, maintained dependencies and correct asynchronous code matter more than the language label. Enable only the gateway intents your bot needs.

Let a service manager run the process

Use systemd or a platform process manager so the bot starts after a reboot and can recover from a crash. Limit restart loops and send logs to a defined destination. A health check should verify more than a process ID, for example the most recent successful gateway connection.

Update without guesswork

• Schedule dependency updates and read their changelogs.
• Test commands and permissions in a separate guild.
• Back up data before database migrations.
• Handle shutdown signals and finish active jobs cleanly.
