DDoS protection for game servers: What network filtering can do

Volume is only one form of attack

A volumetric attack tries to saturate links or network devices with traffic. Other attacks create many plausible packets or target one service. With UDP-based game protocols in particular, legitimate player traffic and abusive packets cannot always be separated by one simple rule.

Mitigation filters before traffic reaches the server

An upstream protection system analyzes traffic and discards recognized attack patterns before they reach the instance. Effective filtering must absorb volume while forwarding legitimate connections reliably. Rules that are too aggressive affect players; loose rules pass harmful load. Operational experience and continuous tuning matter.

Network protection does not repair an application

A broken mod, slow database query or public admin panel remains a risk behind a network filter. Restrict management ports, use strong authentication and keep servers and extensions current. Application-level rate limits complement the network where requests can be evaluated in context.

What operators should prepare

• Understand normal traffic and player patterns.
• Preserve timestamps and logs during an incident.
• Close unused ports and restrict query interfaces.
• Keep a contact route outside the hosted system.

Learn from each event

Review duration, target, user impact and possible false positives. Make controlled changes because a rushed firewall rule can block more legitimate traffic than the attack. A short incident note makes the next response faster.
